The African Diplomatic Group of South Africa celebrated Africa Day on 1 June 2024 at Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld School sports grounds.
The African Union marked 2024 as the Year of Education. This year marks the 61st anniversary of the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity, now the African Union (AU), which has 55 member countries.
The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Dean of Africa, Ambassadors and High Commissioners, as well as members of the South African government, attended the celebratory event.
Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr Grace Naledi Pandor, addressed members of the Diplomatic Corps and guests. In her address, Minister Pandor said:
“We must become independent finally and truly effective in all global affairs, and global institutions. We are the largest continent in the world, we must stop behaving like we are the smallest continent in the world.”
Minister Pandor went on to say that South Africa has a significant population and significant customer base, and as Africans, we have a key role to play in shaping the character of the world. When the Organisation of African Unity was created on 25 May 1963, it was with the desire for a united Africa, an Africa that would work together and for the benefit of Africa. When the African Union was established, it was a recognition that African countries had reached a stage where they could develop a common programme for Africa, focusing on development and advancement for the continent.
Minister Pandor continued:
“I look forward to the day South Africa will have a woman president, but I believe we are doing very well in advancing women in politics.”
In terms of foreign policy, Africa is number one for South Africa and this should be the priority for everyone on African soil.
Minister Pandor wished everyone a happy Africa Day. A walk through the event allowed the Minister to interact with the various stands and Ambassadors of the African continent, where traditional food, drinks, and crafts were shared.
The Embassy of Mauritius gave away two air tickets to Mauritius, as did the Embassy of Kenya.
The European Union participated, giving all attendees a lovely gift bag. The Embassy of Norway and the Embassy of Jamaica were among the other participants that supported the event.
Guests enjoyed performances of traditional dance, poetry, and singing from the various countries present.
