On 22 October 2024, the High Commission of Cyprus in Pretoria hosted a reception at the Irene Country Club to celebrate the 64th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus’ declaration of independence in 1960.

H.E. Mr Antonis Mandritis welcomed guests to the occasion, reflecting on the historical ties between Cyprus and South Africa.

“Relations with South Africa began even before the independence of Cyprus and the establishment of a democratic South Africa. In fact, they began at the beginning of the 20th century when Cypriots arrived in South Africa looking for a better future,” said H.E. Mr Mandritis.

The first Cypriot High Commissioner accredited to South Africa presented his credentials in 1999, and since then, bilateral engagement has flourished through the EU-South Africa strategic partnership. This partnership is underpinned by a wide range of actions between the European Union, its Member States, and South Africa.

Deputy Director General at the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Advocate Shireen Said, congratulated Cyprus on behalf of the Government and people of South Africa. South Africa and Cyprus share strong ties, largely due to the influential Greek Cypriot community in South Africa. With an estimated 25,000 Greek Cypriots residing in South Africa, these ties have significantly strengthened people-to-people engagement and mutual understanding.

“The existing bilateral framework between South Africa and Cyprus, including political consultations, affords us opportunities to work together to achieve and foster strong cooperation in various sectors,” said Adv. Said.

Education and tourism are particularly important sectors of cooperation between the two countries. Additionally, South Africa and Cyprus work closely within multilateral institutions, sharing a mutual interest in upholding the principles of the UN Charter.

Guests raised a toast to the prosperity and good health of both nations and later enjoyed a delightful meal from the Cyprus table.
