The Embassy of Spain in Pretoria marked its National Day on 11 October 2024 with a vibrant celebration. H.E. Mr Raimundo Robredo Rubio, Ambassador of Spain, extended heartfelt gratitude to members of the diplomatic corps and other distinguished guests for their presence.
During his address, H.E. Mr Rubio highlighted the Embassy’s notable achievements, including a €5 million donation aimed at youth and women empowerment, fostering connections between South Africa’s Ministry of Electricity and Spanish companies, and other significant collaborative efforts.
A key focus of the celebration was to acknowledge the contributions of Spanish companies that supported the event and to honour two long-serving Embassy staff members. H.E. Mr Rubio, currently in his second tenure in South Africa—his first being 18 years ago—shared a poignant moment reflecting on the dedication of Johanna, who has served at the Embassy for over 24 years, and Mr Moyo, who has dedicated 31 years to the Embassy. As a gesture of appreciation, the Government of Spain awarded both individuals decorations. H.E. Mr Rubio read the official proclamation from the King of Spain and presented the medals.
Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, South Africa’s Minister of Small Business Development, extended congratulations on behalf of the government and people of South Africa. She lauded the dynamic bilateral relations between the two nations, which span diverse fields such as arts and culture, science and education, and the energy sector.
Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams also highlighted Spain’s contribution to South Africa’s sporting landscape, with South African football players being trained at the Spanish La Liga Academy. The academy plays a vital role in promoting social integration, cultural exchange, and youth development. Additionally, discussions are underway between organisations in both countries to establish a youth work exchange programme to further deepen ties.
“Our frequent high-level engagements have strengthened our relations, and we remain committed to ensuring that our bilateral partnership promotes a better, more equitable world for the benefit of our peoples,” said Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams.
South Africa acknowledged Spain’s expanding role in its renewable energy sector. Spanish businesses have made significant investments, creating numerous job opportunities while fostering the inclusion of micro, small, and medium enterprises in the value chain. The robust foreign direct investment flows between the two countries continue to bolster economic cooperation.
The evening concluded with a toast celebrating the enduring friendship, prosperity, and mutual exchange between the Kingdom of Spain and South Africa. Guests were treated to a variety of food stalls, offering an array of fine Spanish cuisine, which added a delightful culinary experience to the occasion.
