The Embassy of Sweden in Pretoria hosted a GBV (Gender Based Violence) seminar with Åsa Ålandh on 17 October 2024 as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. H.E. Mr Håkan Juholt welcomed guests to the event, held at the BBM Foundation in Lyttelton, Pretoria.
Åsa Ålandh, a counsellor at the Swedish women’s shelter Alla Kvinnors Hus, shared her expertise. The non-profit organisation, with over 40 years of experience, specialises in supporting adults and children who have been subjected to domestic violence.
“GBV is not one-dimensional,” Åsa explained, highlighting the multifaceted nature of this societal scourge. Her mission is to analyse the various forms of violence experienced by women, men, and children to develop appropriate responses tailored to diverse contexts.
The seminar provided a platform for stakeholders to share insights and strategies, exchanging advice on the unique challenges faced in South Africa.
Veteran journalist and multiple award-winning Swedish documentary director, Mr Tom Ålandh, added his voice to the event, offering words of wisdom.
“The only way to move forward is to meet, talk, be strategic, take decisions, and take the next step together,” said H.E. Mr Juholt.
Ms Antoinette Maluleke, CEO of the BBM Foundation, expressed gratitude to the Swedish Embassy for their continued support and encouragement.
