The Embassy of Iraq in Pretoria celebrated the centenary of the establishment of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 24th November 1924, as well as the anniversary of Victory Day over terrorism on 20th November 2024, at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria.
Chargé d’Affaires, Dr Ali Osam Abed Ali, welcomed guests to the celebration, which was hosted for the first time in 100 years.
“Iraq has spread a message of peace, both regionally and internationally, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after April 2003,” said Dr Ali.
The Ministry has worked through its active participation in international organisations and conferences to achieve global security and peace, uphold justice and human rights, and support just Arab, Islamic, and international causes. Additionally, it has played a key role in combating terrorism, which has threatened the stability of both the region and the world.
Iraq will continue its diplomatic efforts to achieve unity among Iraqis for stability and prosperity, protect national sovereignty, and enhance the image of Iraq as a country with a rich and historic culture.
On 10th July 2017, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi formally declared victory in the city of Mosul. The battle lasted nearly nine months, despite the international community anticipating it would take ten years. Respect is paid to the martyrs of the Iraqi Army, the Federal Police, the Popular Mobilisation Forces, and the heroes of the Golden Division for their bravery in securing victory over terrorism.
Honourable Chief Director of the Middle East, H.E. Ms Nelia Barnard, congratulated Iraq on behalf of the Government and people of South Africa on this historic occasion.
South Africa and Iraq are members of the United Nations and uphold the UN Charter, sharing common principles and values that guide their respective foreign policies. Both countries remain committed to working towards a more peaceful, prosperous world for all.
According to the Iraqi Foreign Strategy 2023–2026, Iraq is committed to the principles outlined in its constitution, which include respecting state sovereignty, non-interference in the affairs of other nations, and promoting mutual interests. At the same time, Iraq prioritises defending human rights, fostering strong relationships with neighbouring countries, and protecting the rights and dignity of Iraqi citizens abroad.
“Best wishes for prosperity and continued success for your government, and specifically for the Foreign Ministry of Iraq, as it celebrates this very important milestone. You will continue to draw lessons from the past century, take stock of the ever-changing global environment we operate in, and look ahead as we forge forward to achieve the goals and aspirations of our peoples,” said H.E. Ms Barnard.
