The Embassy of Rwanda in Pretoria proudly commemorated Kwibohora32, marking the 32nd anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation Day, at the CT Hotel in Pretoria. The celebration brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, business leaders, and friends of Rwanda to reflect on one of the most significant milestones in the country’s history.
Observed annually on 4 July, Kwibohora (meaning “Liberation”) commemorates the end of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and honours the beginning of Rwanda’s journey towards peace, reconciliation and national renewal. More than three decades later, the occasion stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the Rwandan people and the nation’s remarkable transformation.
Addressing the gathering, His Excellency Emmanuel Hategeka, Ambassador of Rwanda to South Africa, reflected on the profound significance of Kwibohora. He paid tribute to the courageous men and women whose sacrifices secured Rwanda’s freedom and created the foundation upon which the country has rebuilt itself.
The Ambassador highlighted Rwanda’s achievements over the past 32 years, pointing to significant progress in education, healthcare, economic development and self-reliance. He noted that the country’s development has been driven by a commitment to good governance, innovation and inclusive growth, while placing unity and reconciliation at the centre of nation building.
“Kwibohora is not only a celebration of liberation but also a reaffirmation of our commitment to safeguarding our unity, protecting our dignity and building a prosperous future for all Rwandans,” Ambassador Hategeka said.
He also welcomed the growing bilateral relationship between Rwanda and South Africa, noting the expanding cooperation between the two countries across trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchanges. He expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to deepen for the mutual benefit of both nations.
Representing the Government of South Africa, Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe conveyed warm congratulations to the people of Rwanda on behalf of the South African Government. He reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between South Africa and Rwanda and acknowledged the importance of continued cooperation between the two countries in advancing peace, development and prosperity across the African continent.
The afternoon served as both a commemoration of Rwanda’s liberation and a celebration of the country’s extraordinary progress over the past three decades. Guests reflected on Rwanda’s inspiring story of resilience, reconciliation and transformation while looking ahead to an even stronger future built on unity, innovation and sustainable development.
As Rwanda celebrated Kwibohora32, the event underscored not only the nation’s hard-earned achievements but also its enduring commitment to peace, regional cooperation and the continued pursuit of shared prosperity for its people and the African continent.
