Every year, on September 18, Chile celebrates Independence Day in grand style to commemorate the declaration of Independence from the Spanish Crown in 1810.
This year was no exception. The Embassy of Chile in Pretoria, South Africa hosted a celebration on the 29 September 2023.
Napoleon’s French armies invaded Spain in 1808 and captured the Spanish monarch, Ferdinand VII. The invasion sparked revolutionary movements in Spain’s American colonies. Chilean revolutionaries forged on to declare independence on September 18, 1810.

Known for its incredibly diverse landscapes, world-renowned wine & beer, to its amazing culture of art, history, famous Chileans, and food, Chile is known for having something that appeals to everyone.
H.E. Mr Julia Fiol and his wife Dr. Maria Jesis Herrero warmly welcomed members of the Diplomatic corps and distinguished guests and friends of Chile to share in the joyous occasion.
The South African police band performed for guests making the afternoon all the more enjoyable.
