On December 11, 2023, The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop unveiled the new Nobel Silver 1 Oz Medallion at the We Love Mandela gallery.

The Mint of Norway commemorates the legacy of Alfred Nobel with the launch of the 2023 1oz Nobel silver medallion. This medallion is a tribute to Alfred Nobel’s commitment to peace, embodying the spirit of unity, innovation, and harmony represented by the Nobel Peace Prize.

The obverse of the medallion features a left profile depiction of Alfred Nobel. Intricate text has been added to these medallions using micro-engraving technology, visible clearly under magnification yet challenging to reproduce.

Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi was honored with the coveted Nobel Peace Prize 2023. In Oslo, on Sunday, December 10th, the Nobel Peace Prize was presented by the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, in the presence of Their Majesties, the King and Queen of Norway, government representatives, and an invited audience. Narges Mohammadi is an unwavering campaigner against the oppression of women in Iran, dedicated to promoting human rights and freedom. As she is currently imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin Prison serving multiple sentences for alleged actions against national security and propaganda against the state, her children accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf.

South Africans hold a particular interest in the Nobel Peace Prize as candidates from Mzanzi have been recipients four times: Albert Luthuli (1960), Desmond Tutu (1984), and jointly Nelson Mandela and F.W. De Klerk in 1993. Apart from the cash prize, Nobel Peace Prize laureates receive a unique medal. One side of the medal portrays Alfred Nobel with the inscription “Pro pace et fraternitate gentium” (For the peace and brotherhood of men). The reverse side displays three men forming a fraternal bond with the words “Prix Nobel de la Paix,” the relevant year, and the name of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate engraved on the edge of the medal.

Rael Demby, CEO of The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop, stated, “We have an exclusive relationship with The Royal Norwegian Mint, granting us sole distribution rights of collectable coins and medals minted by the Mint of Norway, including Nobel memorabilia. We take pride in introducing this new Nobel Silver 1 Oz Medallion and cherish our ongoing relationship with Det Norske Myntverket (Mint of Norway) and the Nobel Laureate programme.”
