The Ambassador of Algeria, H.E. Mr Saad Maandi, held a reception at Pretoria Country Club on 4th November 2024 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Glorious War of Liberation on 1st November 1954.

Since its independence, Algeria has made significant progress in all areas to offer a better life for its people. Under the leadership of President Tebboune, the country is moving forward on the path to political and economic stability.

“The President of the Republic is constantly working to place the citizen at the centre of his concerns through the implementation of programmes and projects that are of interest and a priority for the citizens,” said H.E. Mr Maandi.

The new programme, resulting in 54 commitments aimed at making Algeria stronger and more prosperous, remains a priority for President Tebboune. These reforms have helped the country preserve political stability, revive the national economy, consolidate social cohesion, and strengthen Algeria’s position both politically and internationally.

In the last presidential election, held on 7th September 2024, the President of the Republic reiterated his commitment to increase the GDP to 400 billion USD and to build a strong, non-hydrocarbon national economy by announcing a target of 15 billion USD in non-hydrocarbon exports. The number of companies has increased from 200 to nearly 8,000, with a goal of reaching 20,000 startups by the end of the President’s second term.

Algeria is now the third-largest economy in Africa. Its economic growth was estimated at 4.2% in 2023, one of the highest in the region. Its GDP stood at 260 billion USD in 2023, and the GDP in 2024 is expected to reach 277 billion USD.

Algeria is strengthening its position as a major player in stability and peace-building. Its foreign policy is based on the principles of friendship and good neighbourliness, providing mediation in regional conflicts and participating in regional and international initiatives.

Relations between Algeria and South Africa date back to the 1960s and remain historical and solid, cemented during the struggle against apartheid. Both nations share a vision and a common commitment to promoting the values of peace, justice, and shared prosperity.

“May God bless our two countries,” said H.E. Mr Maandi.

Minister Parks Tau of the DTIC congratulated Algeria on behalf of the Government and people of South Africa.

“The struggle for liberation is not confined to one nation or one people, it is the struggle for justice, identity for all humankind.”

The DTIC’s active participation in the SDFTA framework is a testament to its commitment to building a dynamic African market that promotes inclusivity and benefits all. South Africa remains committed to strengthening trade and investment between South Africa and Algeria. Various sectors—including automotive, agriculture, energy, machinery, metals, and financial services—already contribute to this investment sphere. Notable efforts are underway to establish a business council, which promises to bring these services closer together, creating new opportunities for all.
