The High Commission of the Republic of Singapore welcomed the Chinese Year of the Snake with a traditional prosperity toss (‘lo hei’) on 29th January 2025.

H.E. Mr Zainal Mantaha welcomed Dr Naledi Pandor and guests to the joyous occasion. It was under Dr Pandor’s administration that South Africa became the first African country to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner.

“A very happy Chinese New Year,” said H.E. Mr Mantaha.

The interactive event invited guests born in 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2013 to stand up. These guests, including Dr Pandor, were all born in the Year of the Snake.

Famous South African personalities also born in the Year of the Snake include:

O.R. Tambo
Jazz musician Hugh Masekela
Mangosuthu Buthelezi
Athlete Zola Budd
Actress Charlize Theron

The Symbolism of the Snake
The snake is a highly conflicted symbol in African traditions. While sometimes associated with witchcraft and sorcery, snakes are also linked to the Tokoloshe as their alter ego. However, in other contexts, the snake represents rain, fertility, ancestral spirits, and protection.

In Chinese tradition, the snake symbolises intelligence, adaptability, and elegance. The Year of the Snake is considered a year of transformation, wisdom, and a little bit of mischief—a time to shed old skin, embrace new opportunities, and welcome new beginnings.

“In Singapore, the Year of the Snake is the year we celebrate 60 years of independence,” said H.E. Mr Mantaha.

To mark the occasion, Dr Naledi Pandor assisted in lighting firecrackers, and guests enjoyed a traditional dragon dance and festive cuisine.
