The Vietnam Embassy, in partnership with the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), hosted the Vietnam South Africa Business Forum last week at The Capital Hotel Empire, bringing together senior government officials and business leaders to explore avenues for strengthened bilateral cooperation. The event was attended by H.E. Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of Vietnam, marking a significant moment in the evolving relationship between the two countries.
The forum focused on expanding collaboration in investment, trade and tourism, with delegates from both nations emphasising the untapped potential of the partnership. Discussions underscored Vietnam’s growing role as a dynamic manufacturing and technology hub in Asia, alongside South Africa’s position as a key economic gateway to the African continent.
South Africa signalled its strong interest in advancing economic ties through the presence of several high ranking officials, including:
• Deputy President Paul Mashatile
• Thandi Moraka, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation
• Stella Ndabeni Abrahams, Minister of Small Business Development
In their remarks, the officials highlighted opportunities for increased foreign direct investment, expanded market access and closer cooperation between small and medium enterprises.
A key outcome of the event was the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing bilateral economic cooperation. The agreements are expected to pave the way for new business initiatives, support private sector collaboration and strengthen long term engagement across priority sectors.
Vietnam and South Africa established diplomatic relations in 1993, and the latest forum reinforces their shared commitment to expanding multidimensional cooperation. As trade volumes continue to rise and interest in cross market investment grows, both countries are positioning themselves to leverage new opportunities in a rapidly shifting global economic landscape.
The forum concluded with a renewed call for continued dialogue and practical cooperation, reinforcing expectations that the partnership between Vietnam and South Africa will deepen in the years ahead.
