The Embassy of Belgium in Pretoria hosted a vibrant King’s Day celebration on 14 November 2025, honouring His Majesty King Philippe and continuing a cherished Belgian tradition dating back to 1866. Held at the elegant residence of H.E. Mr Paul Jansen, Ambassador of Belgium to South Africa, the event brought together a distinguished gathering of guests from across government, business and the diplomatic community.
King’s Day is Belgium’s annual tribute to its reigning monarch. It serves as a moment to reflect on Belgium’s history while celebrating its international partnerships. In Pretoria, this spirit of friendship and cooperation was evident throughout the event.
South Africa was proudly represented by Deputy Minister Jane Sithole of Small Business Development, who delivered a keynote message highlighting the importance of collaboration, entrepreneurship and shared opportunities between the two nations. She emphasised that deeper economic ties and support for small businesses can foster inclusive growth, innovation and long term prosperity for both South Africa and Belgium.
Ambassador Jansen, in his address, echoed these sentiments, reaffirming Belgium’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and working together on shared priorities, including sustainable development, trade, education and cultural exchange. He underscored that King’s Day not only honours the Belgian monarchy but also symbolises unity and enduring friendship.
Guests enjoyed Belgian culinary specialities and warm hospitality, creating an atmosphere conducive to dialogue and international camaraderie. Diplomats, South African government officials and representatives from various sectors used the occasion to exchange ideas and explore new avenues for cooperation.
The King’s Day celebration in Pretoria once again highlighted the strong and evolving relationship between Belgium and South Africa, paying tribute to a tradition more than 150 years old while fostering new opportunities under the reign of King Philippe.
