The Embassy of Finland in Pretoria marked a memorable occasion on 2 December 2025 as it celebrated Finnish National Day at the residence of H.E. Mr Pekka Metso. The gathering brought together diplomats, government representatives and friends of Finland for an evening dedicated to shared values, warm dialogue and a vision for deeper cooperation between Finland and South Africa.
The celebration also offered an opportunity to reflect on what makes Finland unique. Consistently ranked the happiest nation in the world, Finland’s global reputation rests on a foundation of accessible world class education, strong social support systems, equality and a society built on trust in public institutions. Its breathtaking natural landscapes and deeply rooted connection to nature further shape Finnish identity, while a commitment to work and life balance continues to inspire wellbeing among its citizens.
In his keynote address, Ambassador Metso highlighted a historic first for Finland on the international stage, the participation of a Finnish President in the G20 Summit, held in Johannesburg from 22 to 23 November. President Alexander Stubb delivered two plenary interventions during the summit. His first address underscored the urgent need to safeguard and strengthen the multilateral system, emphasising rules based cooperation and the reform of global institutions to ensure they remain fair, inclusive and effective.
President Stubb’s second intervention drew attention to Finland’s global leadership in artificial intelligence and its commitment to the responsible development of critical minerals, key components for the world’s clean energy transition. On the sidelines of the summit, he held several bilateral engagements, including discussions with President Cyril Ramaphosa, who extended the invitation for Finland’s participation.
Closing the afternoon, Ambassador Metso offered a heartfelt toast: “To steadfast cooperation with South Africa.” His words captured the spirit of the celebration, one of enduring friendship, shared aspirations and a promising future between the two nations.
