2026, the Year of the Fire Horse, is a year associated with passion, courage, movement, and bold transformation, fitting symbolism for a movement that has never stood still. This year, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day celebrated a powerful milestone, 12 years of heart, hope, and humanity.
The organisation marked this incredible anniversary at the beautiful The Farmhouse in Steyn City, surrounded by 130 guests, friends, partners, and supporters who have helped stitch kindness into the fabric of our communities. It was a deeply special celebration, made even more meaningful by the presence and unwavering support of Carolyn Steyn, whose belief in the movement continues to inspire.
From warm conversations to even warmer blankets, the day served as a moving reminder that when kindness is shared intentionally, it has the power to change lives. Each blanket tells a story. Each stitch carries compassion. And each person present represented a commitment to dignity, care, and humanity.
The Meaning of 12: A Number of Maturity and Completion
The number 12 is rich in meaning across cultures and traditions. It is often seen as the number of completion, maturity, and wholeness, a full cycle reached.
• 12 months complete a year
• 12 hours mark day and night
• 12 zodiac signs guide the seasons
• 12 disciples symbolised spiritual foundation
At 12 years old, a child steps into maturity, and so too has this movement. 67 Blankets has grown up. What began as a simple act of kindness has become a powerful, nationwide movement that wraps communities in warmth, dignity, and hope. Twelve years marks not an ending, but a confident new beginning, grounded, established, and ready for its next chapter.
Music, Memory, and Meaning
Adding depth and emotion to the celebration was a moving performance by Timothy Moloi, whose heartfelt songs honoured the memory of Sharon Barkhuizen, lovingly remembered by Carolyn Steyn as her “little sister”, her champion, warrior, and best friend. The tribute was tender and powerful, reminding everyone present that love, like kindness, never truly leaves us.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
In the fiery, forward moving energy of the Fire Horse, this anniversary felt especially symbolic. It spoke of resilience, momentum, and fearless compassion, values that have defined 67 Blankets from the very beginning.
Here is to 12 years of wrapping communities in warmth and compassion.
Here is to every volunteer, donor, knitter, and believer.
And here is to many more years of making a difference, together.
Long live 67 Blankets.
