On 29 June, the EU Delegation to South Africa, together with the Embassy of Poland and the Embassy of Ukraine, hosted a premiere screening of the award-winning film Under the Volcano at Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria.
The film, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8 September 2024, was directed by Polish filmmaker Damian Kocur. It portrays the emotional turmoil of a young Ukrainian family whose peaceful holiday in Tenerife is shattered by the sudden outbreak of war. On the final day of their vacation, they learn that returning home to Kyiv has become impossible due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Her Excellency Sandra Kramer, Ambassador of the European Union to South Africa, addressed guests ahead of the screening, stating:
“Together, the EU and partners continue to work towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law.”
The European Union remains unwavering in its support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
