Desie Alebachew Maru, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Ethiopia in Pretoria, together with members of the diplomatic corps and distinguished guests, marked the 130th Anniversary of the Victory of Adwa with a commemoration at the elegant Pretoria Country Club, honouring a historic milestone that continues to resonate across Africa and the global African diaspora.
This year marks 130 years since the historic Battle of Adwa, a defining triumph that came to symbolise resistance to colonialism, national unity and enduring African pride. The Victory of Adwa remains a powerful reminder of Ethiopia’s unwavering sovereignty and the resilience of one of the world’s oldest civilisations.
Standing proudly in Addis Ababa, the Adwa Victory Memorial serves as a lasting tribute to this shining victory. As one of the newest museums in the Ethiopian capital, it reflects the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting this defining chapter of national history. The memorial has quickly become a significant cultural and tourist destination, offering visitors meaningful insight into Ethiopia’s glorious past.
The museum houses statues, weapons, uniforms and personal belongings of Ethiopia’s heroes and heroines, alongside modern facilities including conference halls, a multipurpose complex, an amphitheatre and a library, seamlessly blending remembrance with education and national pride.
The Pretoria commemoration was not only a reflection on history, but also a celebration of shared African heritage and solidarity. As Ethiopia honours 130 years since Adwa, the victory continues to inspire generations across the continent and beyond.
