As the sun set over Freedom Park, the Embassy of Peru hosted a poignant wreath laying ceremony on 26 March 2026 in honour of Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, a towering figure in international diplomacy whose legacy continues to resonate across the world.
Pérez de Cuéllar, who served as the fifth Secretary General of the United Nations from 1982 to 1991, played a pivotal role in advancing peace during a complex era of global conflict. Among his most notable achievements was his instrumental role in brokering the ceasefire that brought an end to the Iran Iraq War in 1988. His commitment to peaceful resolution and multilateral diplomacy also extended to Africa, where he supported Namibia on its path to independence.
The ceremony also reflected on his connection to South Africa’s own journey towards democracy. Pérez de Cuéllar shared meaningful moments with Nelson Mandela following his release in 1990, a powerful symbol of his dedication to human rights, reconciliation and global solidarity.
Representing the Government of South Africa, Ambassador Mzoliza Bona of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation expressed the importance of commemorating Pérez de Cuéllar during Human Rights Month. This year’s theme, “Bill of Rights at 30: Making Human Dignity Real,” underscored the enduring relevance of his life’s work and its alignment with South Africa’s constitutional values.
Set against the serene backdrop of Freedom Park, the ceremony offered a moment of reflection on the enduring pursuit of justice, dignity and peace, principles that defined Pérez de Cuéllar’s distinguished career.
Guests later gathered for an evening reception, where conversations continued over glasses of Pisco Sour, Peru’s iconic cocktail, bringing a warm and cultural close to a deeply meaningful tribute.
