The Embassy of the United States of America in Pretoria commemorated one of the most significant milestones in American history with an elegant celebration marking 250 years of United States independence, known as America’s Semiquincentennial.

Hosted by the United States Ambassador to South Africa, L. Brent Bozell III, the event welcomed government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, Americans, and invited guests to celebrate two and a half centuries since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Among the distinguished guests were former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who attended as Guest of Honour, and Lydia Sindisiwe Chikunga, representing the South African Government.

Addressing guests, Ambassador Bozell reflected on the significance of the historic milestone, celebrating the values that have shaped the United States for 250 years while highlighting the enduring partnership between the United States and South Africa.

A pre-recorded message from President Donald Trump underscored the importance of the anniversary and the legacy of the Declaration of Independence.

“We owe it all to the patriots and heroes of 1776,” President Trump said. Reflecting on America’s founding, he added: “With a single sheet of parchment and 56 signatures, America began the greatest political journey in human history.”

The celebration also acknowledged the diplomatic legacy of Benjamin Franklin, widely regarded as America’s first diplomat. Beyond his role in drafting the Declaration of Independence, Franklin communicated with sympathisers in Britain and secured crucial military assistance from France and Spain during the American Revolutionary War.

Ambassador Bozell remarked that, as America commemorates its 250th anniversary, it honours the enduring values that have shaped the nation for two and a half centuries: freedom, opportunity, democracy and innovation. These ideals continue to inspire progress at home while guiding America’s engagement with nations around the world.

The Ambassador also celebrated the longstanding relationship between the United States and South Africa. Through collaboration in trade, education, entrepreneurship, science and cultural exchange, the two countries continue to create opportunities, strengthen connections and advance shared prosperity.

The economic ties between the two nations remain substantial. There are currently between 500 and 600 American companies operating in South Africa, directly employing between 130,000 and 250,000 South Africans. These investments continue to make an important contribution to South Africa’s economy while reinforcing the strong commercial partnership between the two countries.

Guests were treated to a distinctly American experience, enjoying traditional American cuisine and beverages while experiencing some of America’s most iconic brands. Displays featured legendary Harley-Davidson motorcycles, classic Ford and Cadillac automobiles, Delta Air Lines, and other recognisable American companies that have become symbols of innovation, industry and culture.

As the United States marks America250, the anniversary serves not only as a reflection on its remarkable history but also as an opportunity to look towards a future focused on prosperity, security, innovation and opportunity.

The afternoon concluded with a celebration of the enduring friendship between the United States and South Africa and a toast to one of history’s oldest constitutional democracies.

Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸
