South Africa and Germany have reaffirmed their long-standing relationship as Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola welcomed German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Johann Wadephul to Pretoria for an official working visit.

The visit marked another significant milestone in the growing partnership between the two countries, with discussions centred on strengthening political, economic and development cooperation. Following the high-level bilateral talks between the two ministers, an evening reception was hosted by the German Ambassador to South Africa, H.E. Andreas Peschke, at his residence, providing an opportunity for further engagement among members of the diplomatic community and invited guests.

Minister Wadephul’s visit followed the 12th South Africa-Germany Bi-National Commission, held in Berlin earlier this year. The Commission celebrated 30 years of structured bilateral cooperation and culminated in both countries elevating their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, reflecting a shared commitment to closer collaboration on regional and global issues.

During the Pretoria meetings, the ministers reviewed progress on the implementation of the Joint Action Plan adopted in April. The plan aims to deepen cooperation across a range of priority areas, including trade and investment, renewable energy, climate action, skills development, science and innovation, as well as peace, security and multilateral engagement.

South Africa was the final destination of Minister Wadephul’s African tour, which also included visits to Mauritania and Nigeria. His visit underscored Germany’s continued engagement with the African continent and highlighted South Africa’s strategic importance as a key regional partner.

Germany remains one of South Africa’s most important economic partners, with robust commercial ties supporting investment, industrial development and employment. The strengthened Strategic Partnership is expected to further expand opportunities for business, innovation and sustainable economic growth while reinforcing cooperation on shared international priorities.

Beyond economic relations, the partnership reflects a broader commitment to addressing global challenges through dialogue and multilateral cooperation. From climate action and energy transition to peace and security, South Africa and Germany continue to identify areas where closer collaboration can contribute to shared progress.

The visit reaffirmed the enduring friendship between South Africa and Germany and demonstrated both nations’ commitment to building an even stronger partnership for the future.
