The Embassy of Malaysia in South Africa celebrated Malaysia’s 69th National Day and 63rd Malaysia Day with a special reception in Pretoria, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps, government, business and the Malaysian community.
H.E. Datuk Yubazlan Yusof, High Commissioner of Malaysia to South Africa, reflected on the deepening friendship between Malaysia and South Africa, highlighting the strong ties built since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1993.
He emphasised the importance of taking the partnership forward through greater trade and investment, resilient supply chains, security cooperation, technology, renewable energy, halal industries, skills development, education and tourism.
He also highlighted the opportunities presented by Malaysia’s position as a gateway to Asia and South Africa’s role as a gateway to Africa, while encouraging stronger people-to-people connections and greater tourism between the two countries.
The Guest of Honour, H.E. Ambassador Dave Malcomson, Acting Deputy Director-General: Asia & Middle East at DIRCO, conveyed South Africa’s congratulations and reflected on the historic links between the Malay-Indonesian world and South Africa.
He noted that the relationship between the two countries is rooted not only in diplomacy and trade, but also in a shared history, culture and commitment to social justice, equality, multilateralism and Global South solidarity.
The evening also celebrated Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, with a beautiful singing performance by Malaysian children and an impressive demonstration of Silat, Malaysia’s traditional martial art and part of its intangible cultural heritage.
From shared history to new opportunities, Malaysia and South Africa continue to build bridges across continents, prospering together and strengthening the bonds between their peoples.
