There is something special about discovering South Africa from behind the wheel. From winding mountain passes and spectacular coastlines to wildlife-rich reserves, charming towns and hidden gems, a road trip offers the freedom to experience the country at your own pace.

This was the spirit behind “Let’s Talk Road Trips in South Africa”, a coffee morning hosted by the International Diplomatic Spouses Association (IDSA), together with Ron Mackenzie, founder and owner of Embassy Direct magazine, at the beautiful Apogee Boutique Hotel & Spa.

Against the elegant backdrop of Apogee, guests gathered for a morning of travel stories, inspiration and conversation, exploring some of South Africa’s most memorable self-drive routes and destinations.

With expert insights from The Safari Guys, the discussion highlighted just how much there is to discover beyond the well-known tourist attractions. Whether travelling along the Garden Route, exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Drakensberg, heading into the Karoo or venturing towards the country’s spectacular wildlife destinations, South Africa offers an extraordinary variety of experiences within a relatively short drive.

For members of the diplomatic community and their families, road trips are also an opportunity to experience a different side of South Africa. They provide the chance to explore smaller towns, meet local communities, discover unique restaurants and accommodation, and experience landscapes that might otherwise be missed when travelling between major cities.

The morning quickly became an opportunity to share experiences, with guests exchanging favourite destinations, travel tips and stories from their own adventures. From planning the perfect weekend escape to finding those lesser-known places worth adding to the itinerary, the conversation reinforced the idea that sometimes the journey itself is just as memorable as the destination.

And, of course, no road-trip gathering would be complete without a little excitement.

Three lucky guests walked away with fantastic prizes, adding an extra element of fun to an already enjoyable morning.

The event was a celebration not only of travel but also of friendship, connection and the incredible diversity of South Africa. For those who live and work in the country’s diplomatic community, exploring the country together creates opportunities to build relationships while discovering the many experiences South Africa has to offer.

As the morning came to an end, one message was clear: South Africa is made for road trips.

So, fill up the tank, choose a destination or simply follow the road, and get ready to discover the hidden gems waiting around the next corner.

Here’s to open roads, unforgettable journeys and many more adventures across South Africa!
