The Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in South Africa marked one of the country’s most significant national occasions with a reception celebrating Victory Day and Turkish Armed Forces Day on 28 August.
Hosted by H.E. Ambassador K. Nilvana Darama Yıldırımgeç at the Turkish Residence in Pretoria, the gathering brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, military officials, business leaders and friends of Türkiye to commemorate the historic victory of 30 August 1922 and reflect on the enduring ties between Türkiye and South Africa.
Victory Day commemorates the decisive Battle of Dumlupınar, fought on 30 August 1922 during Türkiye’s War of Independence. The victory marked a crucial turning point in the national struggle and paved the way for the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye.
In his remarks, the Turkish Military Attaché described the occasion as one of great pride and excitement for the Turkish people, emphasising that the victory represented one of the most glorious achievements of the national struggle for independence.
He said the determination and commitment demonstrated during the War of Independence had continued to inspire the Turkish nation and the Turkish Armed Forces for generations.
“Today, as we commemorate this victory, we also commemorate Turkish Armed Forces Day in honour of our armed forces,” he said.
The Military Attaché highlighted the development of Türkiye’s defence and security capabilities, noting the country’s growing role as an influential regional actor and its contribution to international peace and stability.
He said the Turkish Armed Forces continued to contribute to peacekeeping and stability through cooperation with allies and partners, participation in national and international exercises, and operations across land, maritime, air and cyber domains.
The address also highlighted Türkiye’s expanding defence and aerospace industry, which has developed a broad range of indigenous capabilities, including land, maritime and air systems, helicopters, naval platforms, weapons, smart munitions, air defence and electronic warfare systems.
For Türkiye, defence cooperation is increasingly viewed not only in terms of military capabilities, but also as an opportunity to strengthen long-term partnerships based on trust, technology exchange and shared expertise.
The Military Attaché emphasised that Türkiye and South Africa share a common vision of a future defined by peace, prosperity and progress.
“Both nations recognise the importance of promoting stability and security in their respective regions and beyond,” he said, highlighting dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation as important principles underpinning bilateral relations.
The relationship between the two countries, he added, continues to develop through mutual respect, cultural exchanges and shared interests.
He also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for Türkiye’s independence and sovereignty, particularly the founder of modern Türkiye, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, his comrades in arms and veterans who have since passed away.
Ambassador K. Nilvana Darama Yıldırımgeç welcomed guests to the residence and reflected on the historical significance of the day.
She recalled that on 30 August 1922, the Turkish people achieved a decisive victory at the Battle of Dumlupınar in Anatolia, describing it as a defining moment in the War of Independence.
The victory, she said, followed years of struggle and sacrifice and was achieved under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades in arms.
“With vision, courage and determination, they gave a nation facing extraordinary challenges the confidence to build its future,” the Ambassador said.
She called on guests to remember with respect and gratitude all those who contributed to Türkiye’s independence.
Over the past century, she noted, Türkiye has continued to build on that legacy by combining its historical heritage with innovation, development and a strong commitment to progress.
The Ambassador also spoke about the evolution of Türkiye’s defence and aerospace industry, describing it as a sector with growing capabilities in research and development, design and production, as well as an expanding network of international partnerships.
“For Türkiye, defence cooperation is not simply about capabilities and equipment. It is also about trust, technological cooperation, knowledge sharing and long-term partnerships,” she said.
This approach, she noted, was particularly relevant to Türkiye’s relationship with South Africa.
Türkiye and South Africa are influential countries in their respective regions and share commitments to peaceful cooperation, multilateralism and the pursuit of a more equitable international order.
Ambassador Yıldırımgeç said bilateral relations continued to expand across a broad range of areas, including trade and investment, defence and security, technology, infrastructure, energy and people-to-people relations.
She also highlighted the importance of Türkiye’s defence industry engagement with South Africa, including the participation of Turkish defence and aerospace companies and institutions at upcoming exhibitions and platforms in the country.
The Ambassador used the occasion to reflect on the wider meaning of Victory Day in an increasingly uncertain world.
“Peace should never be taken for granted,” she said, pointing to conflicts around the world that continue to cause human suffering.
Türkiye, she noted, continues to advocate dialogue, diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, while supporting international cooperation and human dignity.
“Our history reminds us that independence and peace are deeply connected,” she said.
The Ambassador stressed that the victory commemorated on 30 August was not an end in itself, but rather the beginning of a new chapter that ultimately led to the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye and laid the foundations for a future centred on sovereignty, development and peace.
The reception concluded with a tribute to the soldiers and heroes who made sacrifices for Türkiye throughout its history, as well as an expression of appreciation for those working to strengthen Türkiye-South Africa relations.
Ambassador Yıldırımgeç also extended sincere appreciation to Turkish Aerospace Industries for its valuable contribution to strengthening Türkiye’s defence and aerospace cooperation internationally.
The afternoon served as both a commemoration of a defining moment in Turkish history and a celebration of the continuing friendship between Türkiye and South Africa.
As guests gathered at the Turkish Residence, the message of the occasion extended beyond military history: the sacrifices of previous generations should continue to inspire nations to pursue peace, sovereignty, cooperation and a more prosperous future.
