A special evening in Pretoria brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government officials and friends of Bulgaria to bid farewell to H.E. Maria Pavlova Tzotzorkova-Kaymaktchieva, Ambassador of Bulgaria to South Africa, as she concludes an impressive five years and seven months of diplomatic service in the country.
The farewell reception was an opportunity to reflect on Ambassador Maria’s tenure and the relationships she built during her time in South Africa. Her diplomatic mission has been marked by engagement, friendship and a commitment to strengthening the longstanding ties between Bulgaria and South Africa.
Among the distinguished guests were Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes and his wife, whose presence reflected the importance of the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Also in attendance was Phumzile Mazibuko, Chief Director at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), responsible for Eastern Europe and the Baltic countries.
Farewell receptions are always occasions of mixed emotions. While they mark the end of an ambassador’s posting, they also provide an opportunity to celebrate the friendships, partnerships and memories created along the way. For Ambassador Maria, five years and seven months represented a significant chapter of diplomatic service in South Africa and an opportunity to deepen people-to-people and institutional connections between the two nations.
Bulgaria and South Africa have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with cooperation extending across political, economic, cultural and people-to-people spheres. During her posting, Ambassador Maria was part of the diplomatic community working to strengthen these links and promote greater understanding between the two countries.
The reception provided guests with an opportunity to express their appreciation for her contributions and to acknowledge the important role ambassadors play in bringing nations closer together. Beyond official engagements and bilateral meetings, diplomacy is also built through relationships, cultural exchange and the personal connections formed between representatives of different countries.
As Ambassador Maria prepares to begin her next chapter, she leaves South Africa with the warm wishes of colleagues and friends across the diplomatic and government communities.
Her departure marks the end of an important chapter, but the relationships cultivated during her tenure will continue to form part of the enduring bridge between Bulgaria and South Africa.
Guests raised a toast to H.E. Maria Pavlova Tzotzorkova-Kaymaktchieva, thanking her for her service and wishing her every success, happiness and fulfilment in her future endeavours.
Goodbye, Ambassador Maria, and thank you for five years and seven months of friendship and diplomacy in South Africa.
