The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrated its 94th National Day on 23 September 2024 at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria. The event began with the screening of a short video showcasing “The Line,” a futuristic, linear smart city under construction in Saudi Arabia’s Neom, Tabuk Province. This city is designed to have no cars, streets, or carbon emissions and will eventually accommodate 9 million people within a footprint of just 34 square kilometers.

H.E. Mr Faisal Falah Al-Harbi welcomed members of the diplomatic corps and distinguished guests to the National Day celebration, marking the day in 1932 when the world witnessed the unification of the Arabian Peninsula. From a desert landscape, Saudi Arabia has transformed into a beacon of scientific and civilised progress.

Today, Saudi Arabia is a modern, vibrant, and prosperous nation, playing a key role in both regional and international affairs. The Kingdom has become a leading player in the global community, excelling in politics, diplomacy, the economy, and technology, while also making significant contributions to promoting peace and stability. The country continues to cooperate with its international partners across various sectors.

Saudi Arabia also plays a leading role in stabilising global energy markets while spearheading the green transition through initiatives such as “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East.” In 2016, the Kingdom launched “Saudi Vision 2030,” a government programme aiming to increase diversification economically, socially, and culturally, in line with the vision of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. The unemployment rate reached a historic low of 7.6% in the first quarter of 2024, a significant decrease from 13% in 2016.

In tourism, the Kingdom set a target to attract 100 million tourists by 2030. This goal was surpassed in 2023, with the number of tourists reaching 109 million. Saudi Arabia also maintains strong, historical relations with African countries, providing over 45 billion USD in humanitarian aid to 54 nations. Additionally, the Kingdom hosted the first Saudi-Africa Summit in November 2023, further showcasing its commitment to developing cooperation and partnerships with African countries, expanding trade, and promoting integration.

Saudi Arabia strongly supported the African Union’s bid to join the G20 as a permanent member, recognising the Union’s critical role in addressing global challenges. The Kingdom’s distinguished relations with the international community, particularly African countries, have led to significant successes. South Africa is one of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent partners, with diplomatic relations established in 1994.

“Shortly after Mandela’s election as President, our bilateral relations began growing at a solid pace,” said H.E. Mr Al-Harbi.

Over the past decade, the frequency of high-level visits has increased, reflecting the deepening ties between the two countries. President Ramaphosa’s visit to Saudi Arabia in 2022 marked another milestone, with the signing of agreements worth 15 billion USD, covering a wide range of sectors. Furthermore, the 9th session of the Saudi-South Africa Joint Commission was hosted by the South African government, attended by over 34 Saudi government entities, as well as numerous Saudi companies and business leaders.

“We celebrate the friendship and cooperation with South Africa and look forward to continuing our work together to build a better future,” said H.E. Mr Al-Harbi.

The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and a delightful lunch.
