The Embassy of the Dominican Republic launched the government’s new tourism campaign on 25 September 2024 at the Embassy in Pretoria. H.E. Erika Alvarez Rodriguez welcomed guests to the event.
In 2021, the Dominican Republic ranked first as the top destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Caribbean. It was also ranked first for the best tourism performance in 2022, compared to 2019. Additionally, the country holds the top spot as the leading destination for renewable energy FDI in Central America and the Caribbean, and it was named the number one country for tourism recovery worldwide, as well as for transportation infrastructure in Central America.
Notably, the Dominican Republic boasts the highest projected GDP growth in the entire Latin American region for both 2023 and 2024. Its impressive infrastructure includes 12 cargo ports, 8 international airports, and 5 cruise terminals, making connectivity fast and efficient.
Tourism in the Dominican Republic has recovered to pre-pandemic levels and is growing faster than expected, despite challenges such as the global oil crisis. The tourism sector is focusing on key strategic areas to drive further growth, including real estate tourism, sports marina tourism, cruise tourism, golf tourism (with 27 golf courses on the island), fishing tourism, and medical tourism.
Influencer Victor Dionicio, from the Dominican Republic, shared some of his favourite destinations in the country, such as Puerto Plata, Samaná, and Cabo Rojo. President Luis Abinader has recently launched the first phase of the new Cabo Rojo-Pedernales tourism zone, a $2.245 billion investment over 10 years. This project will include the construction of nine hotels, an international airport, a shopping centre, a water supply system, a waste treatment plant, and essential infrastructure such as roads and electrical systems. The development is expected to significantly boost the region’s economy.
With its year-round blue skies and sunshine, the Dominican Republic is an ideal holiday destination, and certainly a bucket list location for travellers.
